On Wednesday 21st January 2009 the group held their 4th Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness evening. After great successes of previous nights held in Coventry it was decided to include areas further afield who are covered by our charity. The evening was held at Rugby St Cross who after meeting with the management team became eager to support our cause.
The evening was a great success, even with the wind and rain the outpatients department was a great place to have the awareness night, with the help of Carl Holland M D of the hospital and Tina Hardiman Sister and her staff who stayed to the very end to make sure all went well.
We would like to thank all volunteers who attended the evening and also those who helped in advance to make the evening run well. We have received many grateful comments. Thanks to the continued efforts of the helpers the evening also raised a value of £397 towards the charity.
Tea and biscuits were on sale in the cafe thanks to The League of Friends who also volunteered their own time.
Mark Pawsey Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Rugby came along to talk about what we were doing, He said its a great thing we are doing. We are saving lives and he could not understand why the evening is funded only by donations and organised by volunteers. Mark will be giving the charity his support and will be asking questions as to why the NHS do not support this action. Mark also stated that he would like to help if he can in the future, after an interesting chat he went along for his P S A test.
The Lord Mayer of Rugby gave his apologies as he could not come at that time but would also support us all the way
Dr Steve Smith , Consultant Clinical Biochemist for UHCW NHS trust and his team also did a great job of booking in the men and directing them for their PSA test, where a team of 6 phlebotomists were ready to take the blood test. The team ensured that the queue continued to flow and waiting times were kept to a minimum.
Out of all who attended 194 men had bloods taken out of which 65 decided to have a DRE.Once again the DRE tests were carried out solely by Rob Blacklock one of the charities trustees, without whom this event would not have been possible. The team would like to thank Rob for his continued support of his time and of his finger.
We would like to extend our thanks to the Rugby Advertiser, Rugby FM and Rugby St Cross for the advertising they carried out to publicise the event.
