This event, held on 24th January 2007, was a great success.
375 men attended the evening
337 had a PSA (blood) test.
Consultants were on hand to give men a DRE (internal examination) and 295 took up the offer.
Subsequently the results showed:
47 men were advised to seek referral for further examination (14%).
28 men had an abnormal PSA
16 men an abnormal DRE
3 men had abnormalities in both tests.
The results do not mean that 47 men had cancer, but it does make sense to have further tests to eliminate that possibility.
The PSA test on its own is not as reliable an indicator of a possible problem as both tests taken at about the same time (preferably blood test first).
If only one man has cancer and the event has caught it at an early stage, then the Association feels it was worth every penny spent.
The Prostate Cancer Support Association (Central England) is indebted to the COVENTRY LEOFRIC LIONS, Glyn Walters, the consultants, phlebotomists and the many background workers who worked very hard to make the evening such a success. Also there are those who helped by sponsoring in various ways.
